“A student who underwent an operation on his back later died in his mother’s arms after suffering a blood clot which was ‘likely a result of the surgery’, an inquest has heard.

Rhys Hill, 20, from Stockport, Greater Manchester, underwent a procedure to release pressure on his spinal nerves at Royal Preston Hospital on January 27 last year.

Three days after the operation, he returned home to Cheadle Hulme to recover.

His mother, Karen Hill, said she was never told about the ‘signs and symptoms’ of a blood clot and what to look out for.

Rhys also refused an injection of the anticoagulant drug, dalteparinto, to help prevent it, the inquest heard.

His diagnoses ‘effectively amounted to a learning disability’ the hearing was told. He also had a history of self-harm and suicidal ideation. It was during a visit to A&E where he had to be restrained that the family claim he suffered the back injury which later needed surgery.
