Road Traffic Accident claim FAQs:
RTA claims are straightforward, and follow strict guidelines set by the government that all law firms must abide by. When you suffer an injury on the road (in a car, on public transport, on a bike, or even as a pedestrian) you could use a law firm to make a Road Traffic Accident claim. These are usually done on a no win, no fee basis.
In short, when we take on your claim we will gather information about your injuries, the accident, and any other losses you have incurred as a result, and submit a claim to the insurer of the party responsible. Whilst this is happening, we will also arrange for you to receive physiotherapy and begin the recovery process. Our aim is to try and help you get back to where you were before the accident – physically, mentally, and financially.
The information we require to handle your claim is very straightforward. We need the names of everyone involved, your contact details, the date and time of the accident, the registration numbers of the vehicles in the accident, and some general information about what happened.
It would also be extremely helpful to see any pictures or videos you have of the scene of the accident.
If you were involved in an accident on public transport, we need to know the name / route of the bus would be beneficial.

Generally speaking, Road Traffic Accidents result in relatively minor injuries and civil disputes – so the police simply do not need to investigate them. In fact, the overwhelming majority of RTA cases are resolved without any need for police involvement.
However, there are some circumstances where you should absolutely report your accident to the police. For example, if someone was seriously injured in a crash, if the accident caused a dangerous obstruction of the road, or if you are unable to exchange details with other people involved (such as in a hit and run case).
Accidents on the road can lead to all kinds of injuries, scaling in severity depending on the nature of the incident. Some of the more common ones are:
- Brain and Head injuries such as concussion, skull fractures, and contusions.
- Facial injuries such as broken jaws, skin lacerations caused by flying glass, fractures to the eye socket or nose, and loss of teeth.
- Neck injuries such as whiplash, facet joint injuries, and cervical disc herniation / fractures.
- Back & Spinal Cord injuries such as herniated discs, spinal fractures, and general SCI (Spinal Cord Injury).
- Limb injuries such as torn rotator cuffs, hand and wrist fractures, torn ligaments in the knee, and hip dislocations.
- Internal injuries such as soft tissue damage, organ damage, abdominal trauma, internal bleeding, and cracked ribs.
- Psychological injuries such as PTSD, acute stress, and ongoing general anxiety about driving / cycling.
